I am aware that the delivery which Benaud call Warne's "Flipper" here, may not be the "Shane Warne Flipper".
A quick Youtube search will give you Shane Warne himself demonstrating his flipper delivery and it looks completely different to this.
I reckon the delivery Benaud calls a Warne's flipper here is more akin to Benauds "skidder" which Benaud states he bowled through the fingers third and forth fingers. (Though this would not explain why Benaud describes Warne delivery here as the flipper). My best guess is Warne developed this "skidder" delivery into his now well known "slider", which he started bowling effectively in 2002.
To be honest, I reckon the lexicon of wrist spin bowl in very much in a muddle. I would suggest this is because of a number of reasons.
One reason due to the secrecy for which wrist spinners keep around their own deliveries. They don't mind the confusion about the name of the delivery, as long a they, themselves, know what they are bowling.
Also different bowlers used the same names for the different deliveries, and there is often a cross over.
Look at youtube examples of Warne and Benaud bowling their "Flipper's" and their hand position at release is very different. but they are both call it "the flipper".
Ultimately you decide.
Benaud was arguably the greatest Aussie captain ever, and is one of the top five leggies of all time.
I ultimately respect Benaud's opinion more than my own.....
