In this ancient garden of Mahabodhi Temple at Bodh gaya, a Barbet calls while two cute Tibetan children run past our camera.
When they prostrate, they seek to purify their delusions, negativities and their bad karma. His Holiness teaches them that as long as they suffer from delusions, they are making bad karma – intentionally and unintentionally – all the time, from morning to night. To counteract their bad actions, one thing they can do is to engage in wholesome spiritual practices, like reciting mantras, or making offerings or prostrations. In contemporary Western Buddhism, some teachers use prostrations as a practice unto itself, while other teachers relegate prostrations to customary liturgical ritual, ancillary to meditation.
Prostrations may also be subsumed within sadhana repetitions of various vinyasa forms of yogic discipline, such as Trul Khor, e.g. Importantly, vinyasa forms were directly influenced from Buddhist 'impermanence' (anitya) as was the language of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras informed by Buddhist discourse.
The Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, marking the location where Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment. Bodh Gaya (located in Gaya district) is located about 96 km (60 mi) from Patna, Bihar state, India.
The complex was primarily a Mahayana site. Images of the site include Padmapani, Avalokiteśvara, Vajrapani, Khasarpana, Tara, Marichi, Yamantaka, Jambhala and Vajravārāhī. Images of Vishnu, Mahadeva, Surya and other Vedic deities are also associated with the site.
